Type of a scam Debt Collections

A woman by the name of Valerie Smith contacted me via telephone on or about November 3rd, 2015 claiming to be a debt collector for JCPenney. I did have an old account with JCPenney and was not sure if the account closed in good standing. Valerie Smith explained to me that I owed $2463.24 to JCPenney and they were in charge of collecting the debt and if I did not pay them they would summons me to court to get the payment. I began paying them $300 a month, drafted from my bank account for the months of November 2015, December, January 2016, and February at which time I converted the payment to $100 a month for March and April of 2016. In April 2016, I discovered that this company may be a fraud / scam company and when I investigated the debt, I found that I did in fact have an account with JCPenney that was closed in good standing in 2007, paid in full. This company has extorted $1400 from me under false pretenses and threatened me with civil litigation to persuade me to pay this debt that I do not owe. Furthermore, they do not have a legitimate account number in my name from JCPenney.
