On 20 November 2015, my van broke down and I called my car insurance roadside assistance for a tow. Roadside assistance told me that I had $75 coverage. The tow truck arrived at my house and said that he already burned through all of my insurance tow coverage getting there, so I had to pay him to take the van to the garage. I became suspicious when he told me that I had to pay in cash and that it would be $66 if I didn’t want a receipt, or $66 plus tax if I wanted a receipt. Sure enough, with a receipt, the total came to $75 – the same as what he charged the insurance company. I was suspicious that he was trying to get paid twice what he should have. The tow was exactly 17km, which does not seem like it would be a $150 tow.

I had asked the tow truck driver to indicate on my invoice that the tow cost a total of $150, with me paying $75 cash and State Farm paying $75 coverage, but he refused to write anything other than $75 on the bill. So I am only left with proof that he received $75 – which he did, twice!

I am convinced that I got ripped off.
