Type of a scam Home Improvement

This guy stopped by my mother’s home. She is widowed and 86 years old. One year ago, another scammer rocked her black top driveway, which was not needed. That job was suppose to be good for 5 years. This guy charged her $400 for treating the driveway. I think he may have sprayed Roundup or water on it. I work at a bank and know that he cashed her check immediately at another branch. He also cashed a very large check at my branch for another elderly couple in my area.
