Type of a scam Phishing

I received a telephone call asking me if I was (said my name) and would I be willing to provide a reference for my son who lives in another province. I said yes and then asked who they were and was told that it was private and I should ask my son about it and hung up. Contacted my son who said he did not use my name as a reference for anything. Seems as though they were connecting my name with my phone.
