Type of a scam Tech Support

An alert, purported to be from Microsoft or Windows, crashed into a web page I had just brought up, telling me my computer had been hacked and to contact their support tech immediately. The person I spoke to first asked me what security system I had and proceeded to tell me it was no good. Remember, I thought I was speaking to Microsoft and they said they had a superior system to block all virus, malware, trojan etc. for a one time price (399.99) and no annual renewal. I went for it and let them take control of my computer. I was told it would take 90 to 120 mins. to clean everything up and re-load my programs and their system and they would call me when finished.

I was cautioned not to shut down the pc while this was going on. Instead, shortly after everything started, I woke up an closed everything down. They tried to reach me several times over the next 3 days but I let everything go to voicemail. We called the credit card company, explained the situation and were told the transaction had already gone through but we would not be charged. Since then, we have changed all passwords and account numbers and seem to have dodged a bullet, other than the cost of having the computer scrubbed.
