Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

I was reaching out to homeowners on Housesitter.com. I reached out to Mike on the website and he offered his phone number for fast reply. He asked for my email to send me details. On top of house sitting he offered a temporary job as a personal assistant until he returns home. Mailing items, possibly purchasing things. I had many questions for him to clarify details but he only answed one or two and stated he would give clear instructions and send me money in the mail in advance to complete the tasks. With no more information given on what tasks he needed me to complete and that he was mailing me a check I received a check from a random company. I expected a personal check. This one seemed almost like an official check you would receive from a business but after someone had unfolded it and torn off the parts that usually come with those checks. I immediately tore up the check because I hadn’t heard from him in a week. His posting is still on the Housesitter webste and I don’t want anyone to actually follow through and end up getting scammed.
