Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

I was contacted by Dr. John Powell via e-mail about a job I had applied for on indeed.com. I believed it was a legitimate offer. He sent me a check for $4997.23 for the purpose of buying some gift cards and my salary. As soon as I started to purchase the gift card he canceled the checks. He stated that it was an error but has yet to correct the issue. So I was scammed for the total amount of $2965.00.

So when he canceled the check the bank withdrew the total amount of the original balance. I thought that when the check cleared in my account everything was legal.
