Type of a scam Employment

I was approached by this "company" on a job app through my school. Handshake. I have been in contact with them for three days. I did not give my banking information or my social security number, but they did send me a check. It is coming in tomorrow. Got a call from campus saying a scammer slipped through the cracks and who I was contacting was not actually an employer.
