Type of a scam Employment

I had applied for a virtual assistant/administrative assistant through Linked website. I had the interview through Google Hangout and they told me I had got the job. They stayed I would need equipment for the position and would receive a check through the mail. They asked me for my ID and address. After receiving the check within 2 weeks they wanted me to cash it and buy the products through their vendor. The products would have been a laptop and computer software. After receiving the check I noticed the amount was a little high in the amount of 4600.00. Now I had completely done my research and searched to make sure company and position was legit. I tried to call company and no answer but then I called company again and they stated position was not a real job. Now I already but the check in my account but in savings and put it on hold for 7 days to see if it was legit. After receiving the information from the company about the position I later called my bank and cancelled check. Thank God I did not buy or try to use the money for the so called equipment and software. The scammers were using a real company and all their information but for a fake position. I hope anyone in this position research more about any type of fraud. It’s getting to the point we’re you are afraid to apply to any job through the internet. Now this wasn’t like Craigslist or anything. It was a legit job search website of LinkedIn. Please ask a lot of questions and if you still feel weird about them don’t take position. I will be changing my license and filing a policy report. Thank God I did not send them any other personal information like my SSN or bank information. Just be very careful nowadays.
