Type of a scam Employment

I was contacted via text, after being active on indeed (resume uploaded). Michael j. Farrell claimed to be the hiring manager for the engineering company Ardmore Roderick in Chicago, IL, stating they were opening a location in Memphis, TN and we’re hiring a new 16 employees. He had me download the google Hangouts app and proceeded to interview me just by asking me 10 questions. He then claimed to talk over my interview with supervisors and within 15 minutes, said I was hired. This position was for payroll/customer service representive and able to work from home. He wanted to send me a check so I could purchase all the material and software I would need to do the job. Asked for basic information, nothing in detail. I would be contacted by a supervisor and trained for 2 weeks. It all sounded suspicious so I ended up calling the HR director of Ardmore Roderick, asked if he knew this man and began to tell him the situation. He immediately told me it was a scam and that someone is trying to send you a check, and for individuals to send money back to them. Beware. Confirmed scam.
