Type of a scam Tech Support

Yesterday a message appeared on my screen and a phone # to call I was very scared as this has never happened to me before..They told me that my firewall was no good and hackers could get in and that I had 7 network devices connected to my Computer…they told me they could fix it and proceeded to do that.. So they took over my computer and went about fixing all the things wrong. Then they charged me 499.00 for the technican and fixing the computer… I was skeptical but I was more nervous of things being taken over by devious people.. I didn’t sleep well and have been thing all day. I realize now I should have written to you yesterday.. Is this a legitimate co. and what should I do now.. Please help me
