Type of a scam Fake Invoice/Supplier Bill

We are a home builder and hired a company (*** * *** ***, Inc.) to install Sod on one of our properties, we received an invoice from the company who installed the sod, and we paid them.

Last week I received a call from a company called AGRO TURF CORP. out on Sun City Center, inquiring about payment for this same job, I let them know that I’ve never heard of this company and to send me an invoice. They sent me an invoice for the same exact work that we paid someone else for, I let them know this and asked if they were affiliated with the other company in any way; they were not. I’ve since then emailed them asking who they are, I’ve asked to show me a signed off bid (which I knew that didn’t have, but wanted to see what kind of document they would produce), they have sent me nothing and are ignoring any emails that I send them.

I believe that this is a new type of scam where they look up homes that are being built, they go to these job sites, see what kind of sod is going in and then bill the home builder / homeowner for it. They can get the square footage from the Property Appraisers Site. I believe the AGRO TURF CORP. might have hoped that we would pay them instead of paying the actual company that did it, but since we are tight on our books and really look into things, we caught this. Please be aware of this scam.
