Type of a scam Utility

I received an automated call from 866-241-9938 and they said that my bill was past due and my electricity would be turned off in 30 minutes if I did not make a payment. Sounded pretty fishy! I knew I had paid but thought maybe they hadn’t received my last payment. I double checked online and my bill isn’t due yet. I called the number back and they asked for my account number. I told the man that I wasn’t giving that to him because I thought this was a scam. He hung up the phone on me!

Claimed they changed the banking institution used for auto payments and in order to avoid disconnect needed to make cash payments using a voucher and they would credit back the autopayments that were made for September and August. We are a business and the scam was against our Xcel business account.

First you receive an automated phone call stating it’s "Xcel Energy and due to non-payment, your electric will be disconnected in 30 minutes with no further warning. To avoid this disconnection, please call 800-351-4780". When calling that number you go someplace where English is not the main language. They try to get account information and try to get you to pay by credit card "immediately to avoid disconnection in 30 minutes". I have received this very same phone call every day, at least once for the past 7 days. I have notified Xcel Energy. They are aware and trying to figure out how to stop it.

Type of a scam Debt Collections

Person claiming to be a rep from Xcel Energy phones you, knows your name, and claims to need to collect immediate payment or your electricity/heat will be disconnected within 30 minutes. Encourages you to pay with a pre-paid debit/credit card or will take other credit or bank cards. The real disturbing thing is if you call their number back that they leave (I called from a business phone not my cell phone) it sounds legit and they try to get you to pay your bill with them!
