My Story
Meet Dennis 3783
Dennis is a unique cat with a huge personality. His history before MASH is unknown but he came with some other cats who were all very friendly. Dennis took a long time to show any hint of his friendly side. We believe that Dennis was likely not socialized when he was younger. So adjusting to new people in a new place was hard for him.
Dennis used to lunge and swat at people entering his room. However, after a lot of time spent winning his trust with treats and a little medication to help him to relax, Dennis now greets people with a loud purr, tail up in the air, and walking on tip toes as he rubs against our legs.
It used to be that we could only pet Dennis when he wasn’t looking or else he would swat at our hands. We can now pet him easily and he loves the attention.
We think that Dennis will still take time adjusting to new places and new people. He needs a cat savvy family that will let him come out of his shell at his own pace. If there are children in the home, we are requiring that they be over the age of 12. He is not a good fit for young children or people with thin or sensitive skin as he will likely still have moments where he will swat. He still gets startled by sudden movements and he does not like being picked up.
We recommend that Dennis be started out slowly in his new home. Let him decompress in a small room such as a bathroom or bed room. This way he is less likely to get overwhelmed by too much too quickly. Offer him treats to encourage him to interact with you.
Dennis has shown a strong fondness for other cats. He may benefit from a social cat in his new home.
At MASH, we have noticed that Dennis seems more social and relaxed with people petting him when he is on the floor. When he is on a cat tree or a higher platform like the bunk beds we have here, he has been more likely to swat at people’s hands. We are not sure if this behavior will continue in a home environment.
