I received a mailing-contact ph#877-453-8890, subject heading, "Student Loan Consolidation & Payment Reduction Program". This mailing stated, "Due to your student loan balances totaling over $30,000 you are now eligible to receive benefits from a new law that has passed regarding federal student loans including TOTAL FORGIVENESS in some circumstances."

I was leery about this, but I called anyways, and they told me that as long as I kept up on payments for 240 months, then whatever debt was left at that point would be forgiven. I told them that I am on a $0 payment plan for a year, because I am a caretaker for my father, therefore do not have any income, and they understood that, and I explained that when I am working again, I will make payments according to my income, which is the plan I am on. Anyways, the debt forgiveness after 240 months sounded good, so I continued through the process with the guy-Max Chou (877-231-7606-ext 1085) on the phone, however at the end of the process, he surprised me with "closing costs" in order to process the consolidation, and he said that is 5% at a flat rate, $700+. At that point, after I had already given them my ss#, I questioned the closing costs, explaining to him that I have done school loan consolidations before and never was charged any closing costs, and I cancelled the process, in which he agreed to cancel.

I am concerned that I shared my information with this organization.
