Type of a scam Debt Collections

My husband received a call from 1-844-853-2759 saying he had a debt from 2004 with a bank. We have belonged to this bank for 3 years, why all of a sudden would they be saying he has a debt owed? If he had a debt owed, why would he be able to open an account with the bank? They stated that the debt was $325.00 but if he paid $958 today they would take care of it. If he chose not to pay today, they would take him to court and have to pay 2,000. Something sounds really off.
