My Story
Meet Jerry, a resilient and gorgeous almost 8.5-month-old Shepherd mix with a heartwarming story. Surrendered to the shelter at just six weeks old with a prolapsed anus, Jerry underwent two surgeries to correct it. Now on the mend, he requires a steady, balanced diet for his developing anal muscles, as even a small treat can affect him. His doctor is optimistic about his healing, though his condition may remain chronic. Jerry needs to relieve himself up to four times a day, so a home with a backyard and easy access is ideal.
Jerry has a wonderful demeanor: gentle, loving, playful, and wise beyond his years. Extremely smart and treat-motivated, he knows basic commands like sit, down, and “place.” He’s excellent on a leash and responds quickly to his handler, even being walked by his foster family’s 11-year-old son. Jerry would do well in a home with other dogs and kids, though he should be separated from other dogs during feeding to prevent food stealing. He plays hard with other puppies but is gentle with smaller dogs and respectful when corrected.
Moderate daily exercise, such as walks or outings, keeps Jerry happy. He enjoys trips to baseball and soccer fields, dog-friendly restaurants, and the equestrian center, where he met horses, goats, pigs, and chickens. While he finds chasing chickens fun, he is responsive to correction and can learn manners with more exposure.
Jerry loves his naps, often finding shady spots in the yard or curling up on the couch. Though not a big cuddler, he enjoys being near his people. When meeting new people, he is neutral—pleased to see them without getting overly excited or shy.
Jerry needs a family committed to his training and nurturing. Weighing about 40 pounds now, he may grow another 10 pounds. He’s seeking a forever home that will provide the care, love, and stability he needs. Help us find this remarkable boy the loving home he deserves. Reach out to learn more.
