Total money lost $2,300

Type of a scam Counterfeit Product

On March 18/19 I was a vendor at Sunnyside/Hillhurst Flea Market and my friend gave me a business card. She told me this vendor was new and it seemed interesting. I went to the table and the son asked if I wanted his father to do a reading for me. I was curious so I said yes and I had to roll the shells three times and he asked me some questions and told his son to interpret what he was saying. I was told that I had lots of friends that were jealous of me and that I had a blockage in my life that was stopping me from being successful. The son said if I paid them $63.00 then they would give me a protective envelope and do some prayers to see how they could help me. I agreed and thought they were ligament. I saw them again that next Sunday and we decided that I would visit their house to see what is going on and how they could help me have a better life.

I went to their house March 18/19 but it was not the address that is on the business card; the address was *** *** *** NE in Calgary. I saw them a total of 12 times at their house. The dates that cash money was exchanged was March 22nd in the amount of $280.00, March 23rd in the amount of $1,000.00 (Cash Money Loan), and the rest was given to the father on March 27/19 in the amount of $990.00. The father told me that they would catch my evil spirits in my body and then my life would be good and I would be successful in anything I did. The total cash money I gave them was $2,300.00.

On April 10th they were having difficulty getting the evil spirits out of me so they told me there would have to be a statue that would come from India to help bring out these powerful spirits and that cost would be a total of $6,900.00. I said I didn’t have that kind of money. They persuaded me into getting an iPhone for a guy that was going to give them $2,000.00 to help start my prayers that day. The son and I went to see if I could get an iPhone which I did.

I was feeling a little bit uncomfortable with the phone so I discussed it with the son and he said if I paid out the phone balance then I could cut off the phone number. At this point I am a little bit uneasy with this whole situation but couldn’t talk about it because they told me not to. They didn’t want any problems to arise for them or myself so I didn’t talk about what was going on. The last few visits to their house were to ask how my life was going now that the evil spirits were gone out of my body and I said my life was the same and I wasn’t feeling any kind of changes so they said they would do some special prayers for me to make my life good.

My last visit was May 4th and only spent a few minutes with them and then they walked me to the door to leave. I was feeling a little bit rushed and then I started to think I was being taken for a ride. I went to my mental health worker Kirsten and talked to her about what I was doing for the last 6 weeks. This was the first time I had been able to share what was going on and she told me that I was being scammed and that I should contact the authorities.

I told the manager of the flea market the next day and she said she had no idea they were scamming people. She was going to ban them from the market and that they couldn’t come onto the property anymore. On May 12/19 the manager talked to them about the money and told them to give me back the iPhone and they did so that is one blessing that has come out of this nightmare so far.

I want these people stopped and charged because they are taking people’s money and items under false pretenses. They are advertising on Kijiji which I have reported as a scam. I just want justice.
