I was part of Pitch Week 16, in which I was offered a spot to compete for a ‘traditional publishing contract’ and was asked to pay for two week long stays at this retreat. This was approached as ‘mandatories’ for all contestants in approximately the amount of $4000. They neglected to mention until arriving for the first week-long stay that this did not include food, drinks, etc. until I was already at the retreat and had no other choice but to pay an additional $500 to be able to eat all week. During the course of the ‘competition’ we were offered/expected to pay for additional services including, cover art development, stock art images for the cover art, marketing assistance for us to be helped in developing our own marketing plan for our books, editing services, and many more. On more than one occasion these services were not clearly defined, delivered on time to be utilized during the competition, or were not provided by clearly credentialed specialists. At the end of the second week, the results of the competition showed that I did not win the grand prize. However, I was contacted by the director of the competition Steve Eisner and Dede Cummings of Green Writers Press that I was still going to be offered a ‘traditional publishing contract’ for the low price of $9600 after a 20% discount because they liked me so much and they thought my book was so good. Needless to say this is NOT how a traditional publisher works, it’s how a vanity publisher works and spending thousands of dollars to be offered a bogus contract with a predatory and unethical business practice, married with the fact that oftentimes invoices were not itemized and there were not clear services from credentialed specialists being offered are reasons I felt the need to make this report. I was part of pitch week SIXTEEN, meaning they have done the same thing to countless other people. I hope they won’t have the opportunity to do it to anyone else in the future.
