I received a text offering a work at home job for the company Westat. They said I would get paid $25 an hour for training and $30 an hour after training. The female also said we had to contact via Skype and said I would receive a start up check to purchase the equipment I would need. I received a check a week later of $4,950 and I noticed that was a lot of money and they made a mistake on the address of the company on the check. I looked up the company so that’s how I know. I called the bank that was on the check so they can verify it and they told me it was a fraud and those checks have been going around. Below is a picture of the fraud check I received.

A major company with a gmail email address is never a good sign. No company address, phone number, or website. Still I researched the real company on their official website as well on here on the BBB site.

I was first contacted by Simon Orr from [email protected] and then told to email [email protected] to speak with a Katherine Larson. I was contacted over Google Hangouts for an "interview". They asked generic questions and after I answered them I was told I was hired. The position was for data entry at $25 an hour. I was already suspicious about the job when they sent me a message telling me they would send me a check to purchase a computer, an iPhone and router and whatnot. Then they sent me a message saying they needed me to buy a $50 iTunes gift card and that’s when I realized it was truly a scam. I ended up emailing the actual company to find out if it was a scam and I was informed that it was in fact a scam.

I recd an email from Westat to do work at home doing data entry and they sent me a check for $2800. I was instructed to deposit the check in my bank account. I asked my bank if the check was legitimate and they verified that it was. Westat told me to purchase $2000 Amazon cards at $500 each; also $800 Itune cards at $200 each. I was to take a picture of the cards and email them to Westat — I emailed them yesterday August 21, 2018. BBB gave me the numbers to the FCC and FTC to report this.

Offered employment with company that I had previously applied with at an unusually high pay scale. Confirmed with company directly rather than simply follow through with process that scammers provided.
