Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

i advertised an auto on Craigslist for $1500, and received a text expressing sincere interest.

They sent me a check that looked pretty authentic, but had typos on it & a computer generated signature. The check was for $3950.

I took check to 3 different banks and ask the bank officers to inspect the check, all 3 said they expected fraud.

I then contacted the company that the check was drawn on , and they said they did not issue that check and it is not in their series numbers.

They continued to contact me asking me to deposit the check and send them back the overage after shipping cost were deducted including price of the car.

I blocked their number and reported to authorities. The scam originates out of Cathedral City California, 92234 and the contact is believed to come from burner cell phones.
