Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

My father-in-law received an offer to receive a large sum of money AND a check for $9000 was enclosed in this mailing! They claimed they did rewards lotteries by getting info from retailers where you used your credit or debit card. He was instructed to call a phone# to collect his $888,000! Thankfully he talked to his son about it!
