Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

Recieved a group text stating walmart looking for secret shoppers get paid cash click to apply now. Recieved an email directing me to fill oit basic info and was instructed to join several survey panels etc and i never completed the process. About a week later recieved a priority envelope with a check and one page of instructions for the assignment. What I noticed firat was it was poorly written with typographic errors and 2 different sets of instructions that contradicted each other so i looked up the name mentioned on the letter and googled it to find a news story warning about a man recieving a letter with the same set of instructions to purchase gift cards for the same amout and to send pictures etc.
