Do not fall for this Vehicle VIN scam. A Craigslist user contacted me about a motorcycle I was selling and wanted to buy the bike, but requested I first run a Vehicle VIN report at vehiclenote.com and send him the report. He said he would add the cost of the report to the purchase when he picked up the bike in person.

I was selling a motorcycle on Craigslist and I received a message from who’s name was apparently Willem Kidman, who asked for me to contact him at his Gmail. I did and after several emails back and forth he said he wanted to buy the motorcycle but asked if I could first purchase a vehicle history report from vehiclenote.com and he would reimburse me as long as the bike was clean. When I checked out the site it looked very basic and fishy, so I responded that I would rather pay for the more expensive CarFax report and cover the additional cost. The response to my offer was that I had to use the website they provided. That was a huge red flag so I checked the BBB site and noticed that other had seen a similar scam.

This was a response from a Craigslist ad for a motorcycle. This was the second time this vehiclenote.com scam was tried. The first time I realized it was bogus but this time he was more convincing and I actually tried to get a vehicle report from this website. After paying $24.99 via CC thru a company called FastSpring in California there was a report generated but no way to print it and it disappeared from the screen. Trying to contact vehiclenote was fruitless as you just go around in circles. They have no phone number and their contact page does not work After searching google for vehiclenote.com I found it is a scam.

FYI the address in NYC they use is for the Tribeca Loft Condos where the prices are $2.5 million to $4 million. The CC processor, FastSpring, is owned by Bright Market in England, Amsterdam, and California and appears legitimate but no apparent contact info for them either.

The scam goes like this: several emails using @gmail accounts that sound legitimate. After a few back and froths they ask for a report from vehiclenote.com (not Carfax of other legitimate company).

I was able to contact my CC company immediately and had the charge refunded and the CC cancelled.

Type of a scam Other

I was selling a motorcycle, and had it listed on Craigslist.

I was in contact with what I thought was a potential buyer, and after a few conversations, he said he was very interested in the vehicle, and would like to set up a time to see the vehicle after reviewing a vehicle history report from "VEHICLE NOTE.COM". I said no problem. I went to the site, entered the VIN, and authorized a report to be purchased through PayPal, but no report was ever produced. And the potential buyer would not respond to any further emails, after the one asking to review a vehicle report from that particular site.

A "buyer" contacted me off my craigslist add and immediately asked if I only reply direct to his gmail: [email protected]

After several exchanges of seeming interest he asked me to buy a vin check from a website that has a russian IP and has only been active for a few months and has been reported on BBB: vehiclenote.com. He never called my phone number or sent his phone number. This website is NOT on the official VIN checker sites list found here: https://www.vehiclehistory.gov/nmvtis_vehiclehistory.html

I want to buy the car and i will be paying in cash. However, I’d really want to inspect history report before i come to check it out. I’d really appreciate if you can get it from vehiclenote.com because I’d like to repay you if we cut a deal, and they’re a lot cheaper than carfax or something else. If everything comes out clean on the report we will set up a meeting and I am getting the car.

I was trying to sell my motorcycle online and received emails from a "Michael Rudd" claiming he was interested in my bike. He wanted a VIN report run at www.vehiclenote.com but I chose a more secure and creditable website. I got a vehicle report and sent it to him….days went by and he said to try the www.vehiclenote.com site again as the site was down and now it’s back up. I found this suspicious, looked it up on BBB and found that website associated with phishing attempts. So I deleted his emails and blocked him.
