Type of a scam Identity Theft

This is regarding a potential scam. I was looking for a design job via craigslist and found a position might have fit my needs, which was a graphic design job. The company required my SS# and personal information to do a background check, in addition i was required to bring my laptop for a design test. In my experience with applying for jobs I have never been asked for my social security number. I researched the HR name that corresponded with the email and it turned out this person was guilty of stealing hundreds of stolen identities. "Yvonne Mihailescu".

I responded to the email with a few questions, and the "employer" did not respond back.
