Type of a scam Other

On Nov 18, 10:30pm I discovered someone had left me a voice mail on my landline. The call had come in at 3:01 the previous day, Nov 17. It was an African-American male and you could hardly make out what he was saying. He did state my name with my middle initial (which I only use on checks/credit card signing, legal docs etc) – he even pronounced my first name correctly (most people don’t). Said it was an ‘urgent matter’ and call 615-722-7331. I knew it was a scam, but since he had used my ‘official’ name, it concerned me. I Googled the number and it said it was a cell number in Eagleville, TN. I called the number, it rang and rang and finally a voice mail came on that was so distorted you could not understand a word. The next morning, Sat Nov 19, I was at work and decided to call from my work phone. It was about 9:30am and I think I woke the guy up. Told him I had a message to call that number and ask him who it was. He said "US Marshal’s Office" and he ask me my name, which I told him, he said he’d "look me up in his file". I ask him his name and he replied "Adam Thomas, Deputy Adam Thomas". He ask me my name again and I told him. I ask what his address was and he said "801 Broadway" I ask what city and he mumbled something I could not understand, then ask me my name again. At this point I said "you know, this sounds like a scam" and his reply was "IT IS" and he hung up! My first thought it’s someone in jail just trying to get money but it worries me that he knows my full name. Where did he get it? What is he doing with it? Is he selling it to someone? I know he was just trying to get money from me, but I knew from the start it was a scam. How many others has he scammed? I spoke with the Fraud Dept of Metro Police but I guess there’s not anything they can do unless there’s money involved. So I thought I’d file the info with BBB so hopefully, others won’t fall for his scam either.
