Type of a scam Tech Support

This company tried to scam out of $1999.99 for firewall protection. They somehow put a message on my computer saying it was locked. The first phone number was the 866 number. I let them into my computer and they said that my wifi was hacked my someone in China. It was a very elaborate game that I originally fell for. I let them into my computer and they supposedly ‘fixed’ stuff and then said I should buy some additional firewall protection.

The next day I called Apple, Inc and they told me that there are people who do this to try to get a person to buy firewall protection. I immediately put a stop payment on the check that they had taken a picture of, changed all of my passwords and trashed the stuff they put on my computer.

I am not sure how much information they took off of my computer.
