I had been receiving phone calls from different numbers in California, New York, Florida, and Alabama for weeks. I did not answer them as I did not recognize the number. When I tried to call back, I always got a generic customer service recording. This morning, I finally answered with the intention of telling them to stop calling me, but I was caught off guard by the man who claimed to be from a travel company (as we were looking into them) and the fact it was a local number. He said, "Hi, I am (somebody) from such and such Travel company. Can you hear me ok?" I didn’t think anything of it because I had the TV on and figured it must have been loud on his end. So I paused the TV and said, "Yes I can." He immediately hung up, and I instantly regretted saying anything because I remembered a story about a "Can you hear me" fraud going around. This was the furthest thing from my mind when I answered the phone though.

I am concerned because the story I saw stated that they could steal my identity if they have other information like from a data breach. I was the victim of such a breach when the Office of Personnel Management was hacked.

Caller says hello?

You answer hello.

She says hello can you hear me?

You answer yes

She says I’m having a little problem with my headset.

Then she giggles and starts her speech about a free vacation to Orlando
