If it sounds too good to be true…then it is!

I am an IT consultant and I know better.

My wife wanted a Fitbit – Charge 2 in Gunmetal and I wanted to surprise her. My first mistake was using my phone browser to search and then order the device. A phone browser gives limited information. Normally through my Mac browser I would have noticed the issues from others scammed by this fraudulent site.

The list price for the Fitbit – Charge 2 in Gunmetal goes for about $149.95 so to find it listed at the Towashop site for $129.99 did not seem too far out of range to be suspicious. I went to the site and chose the small Fitbit – Charge 2 in Gunmetal, added it to the shopping cart and proceeded to checkout. At checkout it prompted me to use Paypal, not uncommon. I do have a Paypal account but decided to checkout as a guest(hopefully my saving grace). I filled out all the info and chose to be also contacted via SMS text when the order was shipped.

I submitted the order and received an official looking receipt from Towashop including the order number and a link to the website. The second email that I received was from PayPal and this made me suspicious. It stated that "you have authorized a payment to Nguyen Huu Thoi" and that my CC statement would show PAYPAL *NGUYENHUUTH. Towashop nor Nguyen Huu Thoi has made any attempt to contact me.

Having not received any update to the status of my order or any shipping information, I decided to check into the company and found a lot of complaints against Towashop and TF – Store. I investigated the website and found a US address that is residential and not affiliated with the business and the phone number listed is a recording for "text me number". The email address is [email protected]

Immediately I contacted CitiBank and received confirmation that the funds have been paid out. They said that there is nothing that they can do until it shows on my next statement and then I can dispute it and my best recourse would be to contact PayPal.

After waiting an hour for PayPal to call me back, the rep was very helpful and understanding.

She informed my that since I had paid as a guest instead of using my PayPal account, she would be able to escalate the issue quicker. She said that PayPal would be reaching out to the merchant directly to request a refund. The refund could come as early as two days or take 10 days. If, by the tenth day, the merchant had not responded then PayPal would directly withdrawal the funds on the eleventh day and return them to my CC.

Hopefully this will be the case.

Currently, the towashop.com site is using Google Ads to offer the Fitbit – Charge 2 for $99.99. Don’t be fooled! I have lodged a complaint with Google as well…what a PITA!!
