Type of a scam Tech Support

My computer showed a message that said in part, "the operating system detected a suspicious activity on your computer"… and included the above number to call immediately.The responder assured me that they could fix the bad adware on my computer for a registration fee and a monthly fee thereafter…guaranteed… When I researched this number, others said it was a scam. When I said I was terminating the conversation there was no argument even though they had been very insistent that i needed the help.
