Well I usually don’t go for solicitation, but I was on linkedin and I received a message from a Shelly Crosby and it was a sale to become a mystery shopper. Make money while secret shopping. I have seen these before on platforms like FieldAgent and so I clicked her link which took me to a page where I could fill out my Address, Name, and Email. So I did. I later thought I might be part of a scam as I noticed I couldn’t report the linkedin email I received from Shelly like I could with other linkedin emails.

I then received a text message from a number asking me to verify. I did not respond. A few days later, I received a Priority 2-day mailing envelope with the letter and check attached. I will not be taking this to my bank and I will not be responding to this letter.

I received a priority mail packed from Fairfield, IA along with a letter (attached) and check. Obviously, I know there is no one just mailing large cashiers checks to me so, I started researching the web address provided on the letter~ www.brandtgroup.org. – this is a nonexistent website. I reached out to The Brandt Group via Facebook and this is a scam. Their website is .com. I am forwarding the check and letter to our District Attorneys office. I hope someone else might see this because these scammers are hoping people will deposit this large cashiers check, buy Walmart gift cards, and email them the codes. If people deposit these checks once it is returned to the bank they will be responsible for repaying it after they realize they just got scammed.

Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

Received a pretty innocent legit email via LinkedIn messenger regarding secret shopper. Just for the heck of it I applied not thinking anything more than just the many other job openings I’ve been applying via LinkedIn. Besides did not mention anything regarding a check to be received with instructions. Anyways about a week later I received priority mail with a company logo letter about my ‘task’ the second big surprise was the check for $2450 which was not what I expected. The website threw me off it came out in error and then I started realizing this was a scam. I even text the number provided (406) 414-9811 that I received it…they text me back that I needed to deposit the check. I since blocked this phone number, reported the fake scam through USPS, BBB and the federal trade commission. I also sent pictures the real Brandt Group who was pretty upset that I was scammed and wanted to help shut down the website right away. Be careful out there! Especially job seeking ppl who just want extra money on the side. No matter what you think getting money for free is too good to be true unless you got some kind of bonus at your real job!
