Type of a scam Online Purchase

That’s Great News copies and uses the branding/identity of various businesses in email solicitations in order to deceive consumers. The emails are an attempt to sell plaques to consumers who have recently appeared in a news publication or magazine, or received an award that was publicized. In their solicitation, That’s Great News includes an example of their plaque, which has the logo, content, and images of another business. This deceives the consumer into believing that the email originated from the actual publication or magazine that they had appeared in.

Aside from the obvious trademark and copyright infringements, That’s Great News is falsely representing themselves as another company in order to obtain credit card numbers. When the email does not perform as expected, they resort to calling consumers over and over. A quick Google of That’s Great News returns hundreds of complaints and legal actions, many on BBB.

As a publisher, I have received numerous complaints about this from our clients. Some have used their credit card to make a purchase, under the assumption that they were dealing with us. Others expressed their concerns and some have questioned our integrity because they concluded that we were selling their information to this outside source.

The email from That’s Great News uses our company name in the subject field as well as in other parts of the email and copies content from our publication. It is easy to see how email recipients would draw the conclusion that the email was from us.

This practice has negatively impacted my business and I expect that if this deceptive practice continues, it will inevitably tarnish the reputation of my company, as well as others.
