Type of a scam Tech Support

I bought a new Dell laptop yesterday – my first laptop. When trying to set it up, it would not connect with my wifi signal, so I called the cable company. Apparently my wifi signal was locked up and it took some time for Time Warner to get that fixed. When it finally was and I could connect the laptop to wifi, I hung up with TWC. Almost immediately a box popped up on the laptop screen telling me my laptop was infected, that I should not shut it down or it would be ruined and to call an 888 toll free number. I debated about that, but called the number. The person told me all was ruined even when I told him I wasn’t having problems with my desktop computer. Long story shorter, I allowed him to ‘fix’ my computers for a fee of $359.99. After that call, I was suspicious and called Dell who told me that I had been hacked and ‘fixed’ the problem for an additional $239.
