Type of a scam Online Purchase

I purchased a video game through a legitimate looking website I found through Google Shopping. I used Paypal, thinking the transaction would be secure and I would be backed by their Purchase Protection Guarantee. As soon as the transaction went through, it looked suspicious, because the gmail address for the seller seemed illegitimate.

I received a UPS tracking number, and a confirmation that the delivery was made, however the proof of delivery said it was left at the front desk (there is no front desk where I live). I attempted to contact the seller, who didn’t respond. I attempted to dispute the transaction with PayPal, thinking I would be covered by their purchase protection guarantee since I never received the item. They said the item was delivered. I contacted UPS who told me that the address it was delivered to was completely different from the address I had provided, but there was nothing they could do.

This scam takes advantage of a loophole in Paypal’s policy – Paypal tells you the item was delivered, but the scammer sends a delivery to a different address so they can get the UPS confirmation of delivery so Paypal will not rule in your favor when you dispute the charge. The seller/scam artist has no intention of shipping you the goods you purchased.

Buyer beware.
