Type of a scam Tech Support

In the midst of writing time-sensitive email on Monday, January 15th, my screen suddenly went completely red. I tried to find an escape, but to no avail. I tried to simply leave my email and open another search engine. Nothing worked; the computer was frozen. Then a small rectangle in the right bottom of the screen, bearing a Microsoft logo, told me that I had a virus. If I tried to close or turn off the computer, I would lose everything on it. There was a number to reach my "Microsoft technician". I dialed it, and someone in a huge, very loud and busy room answered. I could scarcely understand his thick southeast Asian accent. He said that he was getting my computer virus fixed, but that it would take a while. Further, I needed to get protection against this time of damaging virus. I foolishly opted for the one year plan, on $171. I refused to give him a card number, and said that I would be willing to send a check. He said that that was fine, but needed my account number and routing number. Silly me! I gave it to him, but realized that I should have listened to my gut instincts, despite the logo. I immediately closed our bank account, and opened a new one. I went to the police right away, who confirmed hearing of this very scam recently. I took the computer to a tech place to have it thoroughly cleaned. The (real) technician said that he found a Trojan Horse and multiple phishing residuals. A neighbor warned me to simply give up the computer, noting that the offender could be lurking, and waiting for me to return. I have nothing to put in the next box, below, since what was sent came out of CA, without a proper address, but with our personal info splashed all over it. Sorry!
