Type of a scam Tech Support

While on the computer, a pop-up appeared directing me to a phone number which turned out to be Spurt Technologies. My computer was rendered inoperable, and I thought I had no other recourse but to call the phone number on the screen. My call was answered, and I was told the my network had be compromised, and a virus or viruses needed to be removed before my computer would be rendered operable again. They wanted money for their service. I paid $320 to insure that my computer, if compromised again, could be fixed by Spurt. They wanted a check for their services, which insured that once the check was cashed, my money was non retrievable, which of course was the whole point of asking for a check instead of a card number. I was scammed, as they knew that I had Symantec virus control on my computer, and that Symantec would have fixed the problem for free.
