Type of a scam Family/Friend Emergency

My mom got a call saying it was her grandson; he was in trouble and needed $1,000. He gave her a Case No. When I called the phone number on caller ID the man would not give his name but asked if I had a Case No. When I gave him the Case No. he said that a relative was in jail and needed money. When I asked the name of the relative, he put me on hold and then hung up. I called again from a different phone and the man that answered (I knew it was the same man because of his accent) said his name was John Smith. I asked why he had called my mom earlier and he said he hadn’t called her and then hung up.
