My daughter’s computer received a pop-up message stating that her files were being removed from her computer and that she should contact a specific phone number to receive HP tech support to have the problem resolved. When we called, the service sounded legitimate until I requested to speak to a manager, by that point they had already remote accessed her computer and had our credit card information. When the ‘manager’ arrived on the phone, the voice was peculiarly close to that of the ‘service’ tech I had just spoken to. By that point they were saying we needed to pay $1200 to have the computer fixed….via remote access. I hung up. I just received my credit card statement and they charged me $298 without authorization.
