Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

I got a check for 2,380 dollars and looked like a real check and when I went to cash it they said they couldn’t so I called the bank that was on the check and gave them the routing number and they said it was an old check that had been cashed under someone else’s name. They wanted me to cash it at my bank then spend 2,000 on gift cards and send them pictures of the gift cards information front and back through email or text.
