Type of a scam Employment

I received a text from someone saying his name was Scott Reasoner with PDC Energy Inc. saying he found my resume online and he had an Operations Support Manager position open. I responded because I am looking for work and the company is legit it seemed from looking online.He said this was a work from home job and the company would provide me with a laptop and printer after I completed two weeks of training. He proceeded to interview me via text message which I thought was unusual. After a successful interview he offered me the job. He emailed me over the paperwork via docusign. There was an offer letter and a tax form so I thought it was real filling it out like normal with my social security number and everything. On day 3 of training after completing three tasks which had me write articles on administrative work, bookkeeping, and customer service relationship management, I was sent a check through Fed Ex for the amount of $2,440. He said I was to deposit these funds into my bank account and I would be acquiring the laptop and printer plus software with them. He also said that included in the amount was a start up bonus for me. I went to the bank to deposit the check and the teller was saying there were red flags about this check and he advised me not to deposit it. So I took the check back and went home. After that I noticed that the check was issued by a different company other than PDC Energy and was instead made out by Murphy Oil USA. I tried to dig deeper but I still have not spoken to him on the phone or through video chat and I don’t want to risk having the check bounce and owing the bank money I don’t have. Also, in the fed ex envelope was a letter from a lady that I hadn’t talked to at all. My guess is that someone is using the a real company name and a real person at the company’s name, to commit an employment check scam.
