Type of a scam Employment

The Scam above was for a fake job interview through Google Hangouts. They offered me an at home job as a Data Entry Clerk for $35 an hour. They said I needed equipment and software for the job, so they were going to send me a check to buy the needed materials. I ended up realizing it was a scam and declining the job, but not before they got my name, age, address, phone number, email, and what bank I’m with. I called them out on being a scam and they admitted to it. I’m not sure what information they were ultimately trying to get.
