Type of a scam Tech Support

While trouble-shooting an issue with my Netgear wireless router, I found a number listed online based on a Google search for "Netgear support." When I called the number, however, the person I spoke with said he did not work for Netgear and instead was a third-party tech support provider who worked for a Canadian-based company called "OYO Technologies," which provides tech support for router/modem and other issues. The man said that his name was William Mehra and that he worked for OYO technologies from an office in San Diego. He told me that my IP address was "infected" and that he would charge $70 to clean or "fix" the IP address, $100 for a 1 yr protection plan or $149 for a 2 year protection plan. I was suspicious because I’d never heard of an IP address being infected, but he said I could get a refund if I was not pleased. He charged my credit card, but after I looked up the company, "OYO Technologies," I discovered that the phone numbers listed on their website do not work, and the email I send to their customer service contact was returned to be as undeliverable. I then spoke with a Netgear support specialist who confirmed there is no such thing as an "infected IP address." After this, I called the number Mr. Mehra gave me and asked for a refund, and also reported fraud to my credit card company.

Type of a scam Tech Support

My computer was froze and I received a phone call offering technical support and lifetime firewall protection. The technician got into my

computer and now has his name and phone number on my computer and calls about every 6 months wanting to get into my computer again.

I ignore his calls as I realize now that it was a scam, but unfortunately he did get some money from me; $349. The website looks very legitimate.
