Type of a scam Employment

I got a text message out of the blue from a guy names James Hagen who claimed they work for Openpath Properties. He sent me a message because he claimed he saw my resume on Indeed and asked if I was interested in a position which involved being his Personal Assistant. He told me that he was in a very time-sensitive need to hire someone so I agreed to the position although in the back of my mind I figured this was a scam. James or whatever his name is told me that he a traveling businessman who always travels out of the country and needed someone to handle his business affairs while he was away. James then proceeded to tell me that in order for me to be his personal assistant I would need some specific computer equipment in order to do the job. So James cut me a check for $3,980.00 and told me to take $250.00 for a sign on bonus and then use the rest to pay for the computer equipment. James told me that he was going to overnight the check and that I should deposit the check ASAP. I figured this was a scam based on the activity but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. Every day for a week James text me in the morning to see if that check had posted and I said No although I never deposited the check. MY bank told me that this check was no good. I tried to call James and of course he didn’t pick up. I don’t know why Indeed.com allowed this scam but I am very irate that I wasted my time with these scam artist.
