Type of a scam Government Agency Imposter

OH Certificate Service sends invoices to newly registered businesses requesting you send them $67.50 for a service that only costs $5 from the Secretary of State, and isn’t a requirement to operate a business within the state. I should mention, the Secretary of State office specifically referred to this "business" as a scam and told me to never, ever, pay them.

The OH Certificate Service (also known as CA Certificate Service, MI Certificate Service, WA Certificate Service, UT Certificate Service, NC Certificate Service, MO Certificate Service, Texas Certificate Service, WA Certificate Service, CertificateFiling.com, and Corporate Compliance Service LLC) are all scammers who prey on new businesses, with locations in multiple states across the country. Michigan’s Attorney General, Dana Nessel, already filed a lawsuit against them last year for, "deceptive solicitations targeting new Michigan businesses … The lawsuit was filed to protect the interests of Michigan’s small businesses and seeks to stop the company’s fraudulent practices and return the swindled funds to their owners."

Sent a letter stating that I needed to request a certificate of good standing with the state of ohio and needed to pay 67.50 to receive it. It did not have the secretary of states official stamp and ohio sos does not require businesses to obtain this.

We recently registered our business name with the State of Ohio, I received a letter from OH Certificate Service asking me to send $67.50 to receive an Ohio Certificate of Good Standing. I was suspicious and did some research, here is what I found:

A certificate of good standing in the State of Ohio can be ordered by mail, in person, or online, but we recommend online. Online processing costs $5 and is immediate. Normal processing takes up to 2 days, plus additional time for mailing, and costs $5.

I’m glad I did some research!

I recently created a business and was looking to create a registered trade name and my lawyer was filing for me but during the process I received the letter in the mail stating I had to pay the filing with this OH Certificate Service and it had all my company and personal information on the letter. Turns out they are a third party scammer who trys to file for you even though my lawyer already completed the process.

Received a mailing requesting $67.50 to acquire a Certificate of Good Standing for a newly filed business with the Secretary of State in Ohio. Seems to be the same scam as previously reported elsewhere: https://www.bbb.org/article/news-releases/20249-misleading-mailings-targeting-lo…

My newly formed business received a letter from OH Certificate Service, 1391 W. 5th Avenue, suite 332, Columbus Ohio, 43212. Phone number 888-842-9265.

In this letter they indicated that I “have to respond by May 8, 2020 in order to receive my Certificate of Good Standing” and to make a check or money order payable to them in the amount of $67.50. Upon researching, I learned that such a certificate is easily obtained for $5.00 online directly on the website of the (real) Ohio Secretary of State.

My complaint is that the letter is highly misleading. The logo, the large “please respond by” text box, and the detailed information about my business (including the entity number), creates the impression that this is an official correspondence coming from the State of Ohio.

I almost paid for this misleading service.

Furthermore, a Google search indicated that the company is headquartered in Florida.
