Total money lost $2,600

Type of a scam Online Purchase

This company advertised on Craigslist, Sea Containers for sale. We contacted the person via email. He let us know the cost of the containers. We had to pay for half of the containers up front by etransfer. Then once the containers were delivered we would pay the rest owing. We sent half the money like we were supposed to ($2600.) Then we were contacted by phone by another individual claiming we needed to pay $1500 for insurance on the containers, once the containers were delivered they were going to refund the $1500. back to us. (This “insurance” was never mentioned in our original conversation with the first individual) We were to send the money by etransfer. At this point we started to suspect something was wrong. They were asking for etransfers to be sent to an individual & not to a company. We googled the company & checked out their website. It seemed legitimate. So we sent the etransfer to him. They sent us an email with the email address of who to send the etransfer too as well as the security question & answer. Then we were contacted saying they couldn’t get the etransfer, could we resend it. Again we were suspicious, so we contacted our bank to make sure the etransfer hadn’t been accepted. The bank canceled the etransfer for us. We then resent the etransfer again, this time with a different security question & answer. Again, they gave us the question & answer. They called us again asking for the security question answer. When we asked why he needed the answer to a question he gave us. Then the fraud department from our bank contacted us and wanted to know what was going on. Because it’s not usual for us to send etransfers to Arkansas. (The person we originally were dealing with was in Edmonton.) This new individual is in Arkansas. Then the bank informed us that you can’t send an etransfer from Canada to the USA. We called the guy back & told him this. We asked if we could pay with VISA for the insurance & was told they couldn’t accept VISA. Then the guy asked us to pay $1500. in iTunes or Best Buy cards or to purchase Bit Coins. We said unless they could produce a Canadian email we were not paying. The guy did give us a Canadian email- again a individual not a company. But we sent the etransfer anyway. Our bank contacted us again, said Interact contacted them. They have this persons account flagged as suspicious fraud activity & didn’t want to transfer the money so our bank didn’t release the transfer. When we called the guy back again he was upset with us & hung up. The original guy we dealt with emailed us asking us to please do what the 2nd guy wants so he can deliver the sea containers. We emailed him back & said at this point we weren’t paying by bit coin or iTunes cards. We asked him to deliver the sea containers as planned & we would send the rest of the amount owing. If they couldn’t deliver the containers we want a refund of our money. He emailed back saying it’s our banks fault this deal isn’t going through. They have incurred costs up to this point because the containers are now in Surrey BC & want us to pay the $1500 insurance fee so they can deliver the containers. We looked up the company with the Better Business Bureau & it does show an address located in Edmonton. Only after all this I noticed the phone number is an Arkansas number. At the time of writing this report we haven’t received the sea containers or a refund.
