Type of a scam Debt Collections

I responded to a call from Nationwide Collections on my phone answering machine. When I called back, I got their answering machine and was asked to leave identifying information. I declined and just hung up. I was called back within 5 minutes. The caller asked for my name. When I said my name, she asked me to repeat it,– louder. I knew this was a scam, so I just hung up. I was again called in about another 5 minutes and the caller identified herself as Carol from Nationwide Collections. She then told me my name (mispronounced — same as it had been originally mispronounced on my phone answering machine).

She said that in 30 days I would receive the information about my debt and then they would process legal action against me. She said if I wanted to appeal, I would have to act on the mail piece they were sending. She was obviously angry with me while she relayed all this because she then said, "Got that? Good luck!" and hung up. She never allowed me ask a question or attempt to understand if, in fact, this call was from California, from a legitimate collections agency, or what the alleged debt was in regards to. Very cheeky scammer!

There is a legitimate collections agency with a very similar name. I think it’s a shame that this company is impersonating a company, which is trying to provide actual service. The confusion could be damaging.

Type of a scam Debt Collections

Brenda from Nationwide Collections called and left several messages that I owed a debt. When I returned the call she said it was a debt from Handicap Workers of America and that I should pay $299.75 to PO Box 77, Bellflower California. When I told her that I didn’t purchase anything from Handicap Workers of America she announced that if I disputed the debt court action and legal fees would be taken. It sounded like a legitimate debt collector until I asked for the information of the Handicap Workers of America and she couldn’t give me that information. I said I would have to investigate this suppose debt. Brenda then offered to reduce the debt owed to $209.84. I politely said I would investigate the alleged debt and call her back.
