I received a phone call today, January 27,2020 (10:38 a.m. CST) with a recording saying that my credit card was being charged by Microsoft Support unless I called the number (866-261-4631) back to cancel. I did not call the phone number back but instead called the MS Support Center from the phone number I found online (1-800-574-2028) for George West, TX. I was only able to leave a voice mail at their request and am waiting for a return phone call. I have no email or image to provide because it was a phone call.

Yesterday while I was on my computer, all of a sudden my laptop froze. The image listed the following # for me to call – 888-334-0953. It stated the website was from Microsoft Support.

After calling and spending well over 30 minutes speaking to someone with very broken English, the person stated "We can fix your computer but first we need to charge one of your accounts $199.

I said "To verify your organization, I will call you back at a different number before I pay the $199.

The person then began almost begging me to first pay the amount so they can initiate the procedure to "clean up" my computer. After several minutes of arguing I hung up, very angry with myself.

I got an email today from [email protected] (Microsoft Support) and subject was recent bill.. please check the below information:

Hii,

Your computer support contract has expired. We will automatically deduct 747 dollar from your account as per as contract rule.

If the account through which you have paid is not active or changed, We have the last 4 digit of your SSN, So we will deduct the 747 dollar from your current operational account.

If you wish to cancel your contract, Please call our financial department in 972-774-5228

GEEK SQUAD

After getting this email i called on the number which is mentioned in the email to cancel the charge which is $747. But the Technician "John"

said that he is the Boss of the company and you need support with Network & Support.

I told him that I have my own Technician from last couple of years and i don’t need any support. But he said that in order to remove you from our record or system that we need to verify some information which included my Full Name , address , email, phone number, Credit card. So i was thinking that if i will give him all information so may be he will remove me from his system or from Financial Department. So i gave him all my information including my D.O.B. He also took access of my Computer with the help of Team Viewer and Show my PC software. After 1 hour conversation i hung up on him because i was very frustrated because they way that he was talking was relentless and rude.I did not give him my SSN information.

After this when i checked my Bank statement so i found there is a fake charge for $1003.99 from WORLDREMIT DENVER CO 802020000

» $1,003.99 on 08/07/2019 which is saying Pending Status. So then i called my bank and told them the whole story and they blocked my Debit Card.

Caller posed as Microsoft support, claiming they were from a New York call center, and had been told by my computer to call me. I asked why it was from a Hawaii area code, they repeated they were from New York and had poor English. I would not converse with them any further, but I believe they are phishing for passwords or possibly credit card numbers.

I received a robo phone call. The message said it was from Microsoft telling me that their consumer support service was closing and that my contract with them could be refunded. I don’t have any IT support contract with anyone. I was told to press 1 for a refund. I just hung up.

Message left saying my Microsoft service was ending and I needed to call “now” their number to avoid having $299.00 taken out of my checking account. Very urgent and threatening sounding. Number on ID and message was, 1-801-890-3659 with random numbers and letters as the name. One minute earlier same random name called with phone number 1-878-201-9383 but left no message.

Thought I would report this, my mother fell for this last year and they still call her from time to time, elderly people are at such risks. They don’t understand the concept of letting the machine get it!!! Thanks for all you do.

My elderly dad received a call stating that $299 would be drawn out of his checking account if he didn’t call and cancel the service. I called the number, on his behalf, and immediately knew it was a scam because of the way they answered the phone. When I asked what service they were providing, they refused to provide the information. The lady I spoke with hung up on me after telling me the money had already been withdrawn from the bank account…I had not provided a name, nor was I calling from the phone number they had originally called. I called back and a man answered the phone. I told him to quit calling my parents making the threats. I gave him the phone number called, however, when I refused to give him a name, he stated that he couldn’t help me without a name so he also hung up on me. Seems the key may be to not reveal your name???

I don’t know if this is a legitimate company or not. This number was on my computer as support. I got a message telling me I was going on to a porno site and asking me to call a phone number-I knew this was probably a scam so I called this so called support number. They charged me $200.00 to remove the message and since my computer was having multiple other problems such as running really slow I allowed them to fix that problem also. They insist I stay on the computer while they look into all kinds of screens. Have me on the computer for over 2 hours but it is running slower than ever. Tonight I get a call that they are getting an urgent message from my computer that someone is on my system. I told them I was busy and couldn’t get on right now. They were very insistent that I had to let them on. I asked them "do you work for me or what??? I told you I am busy right now. Please investigate this for me. They have added their company icon to my system so I can reach them right away if I have a problem but they are so pushy I really feel I have been scammed.

We logged into Facebook and a voice message came on telling us hackers were accessing our credit card information right now through a virus so we need to enter our password or call 1-866-307-9527. The voice message said it was from Microsoft Support. It sounded serious so I called the number to see what was going on and a guy named Mike Lucas with a very thick middle-east accent had no idea why I had called. I told him I wanted to verify the issue with Microsoft and he told me I could do whatever I wanted to do. So I’m reporting this to the BBB.

I received a pop-up, a large red box that indicated a "Google Chrome Critical ERROR". There was a danger of someone trying to get access to my personal logins and bank information. The message said to freeze my accounts due to a great threat of leaking personal information and to call the toll free number 866-273-6507. I did not call the toll free number, I Googled Microsoft Customer Support and confirmed that the toll free number was different.

Browsing Amazon online when a message appeared on the right side of my laptop saying my computer had been infected with a virus and more and I needed to call a number for Microsoft tech support. The message also said my computer would not run properly, some features would be disabled, and my computer may not even turn on if I did not "take immediate action". Even when I tried to close the window, it reappeared. So I called the number…and that was where I went wrong. Spoke to "James Scott" who provided me with tech credentials so it seemed legit. He remotely went through my laptop and controls, showed me a prompt that appeared to show "people listening". Told me to pay $199 for one year protection or $299 for 3 years. I choose the 3 year. After thinking about it for 2 hours, and doing some research of my own, I just knew I had been scammed. I let my emotions get the best of me and that was the hacker/scammers plan. But, I did end up calling the actual Microsoft and I was right, I had been scammed. The real tech was able to remove the malware that was used to remote control my laptop. Since I had caught the scam the same day, my bank was able to reverse the transaction and are monitoring my account until I can close the old one. (The fake tech got my debit card information also my routing and account number after my debit card "failed".) These people were VERY convincing that I had a serious virus and my laptop (which is 3 weeks old) would not work until he handled the "issue". The real Microsoft tech was very helpful and resolved any issue and I did end up paying $149 for the real tech to remotely control my laptop to truly fix the issue.
