Type of a scam Employment

I applied for a position on indeed and was messaging a "John Hamm" about employment for a few weeks. He said he was out of town but needed me to run errands in town while he was gone. I tried calling the company to make sure it was a legit job offer. I called multiple times and always got a voicemail. I left a few voicemails and never got a call back. "John Hamm" sent me a fake check (no watermark and the address of the sender was a high school). A week after that I got a text saying "Hello, our account was hacked and a check of $3590.99 was written to you. Hope you haven’t sent money anywhere. Kindly get back to us as soon as possible for a report." Luckly, I didn’t try to deposit the check but it set back my job search. Bummer.
