Total money lost $170

Type of a scam Online Purchase

We received an email to our business that we had been selected for the "2018 Best of {our town}" award in our business category. The crazy thing is that {our town} actually has a "Best of {our town} Magazine" award! The email claimed that should you accept the award and pay $170, you’ll get a plaque, a press release for the local paper, & other promotional benefits. Thinking that it was basically a form of advertisement (which we’ve done before) and thinking it was our local awards program, we went ahead & applied for it. A couple hours later, we started to become suspicious & did some research. Turns out it is an old scam! (and being a young business, we were naive of this scam) They apparently send you an actual award plaque so you think it’s legit, but the website we found as the source lists the plaque as only $30-40. Basically, the scammer doesn’t even have to touch your bank account and pays out the $30-40 for the plaque, then he pockets the remaining $100+. If he does this multiple times, it can very quickly add up! We did receive the plaque and while it looks very official, it is clearly a scam. Like I said, we probably wouldn’t have fallen for it had our local area not already had a legit "Best of {our town} Magazine" award. We froze the card that we used for the transaction, but are currently disputing the charge with our bank.

Got an email dated 10/9/18 from this place stating that I had won The Best of Columbia Award. It did not feel right so I looked it up under the scams section and found where this has happened several times. When I tried to find the company under the and Dun & Bradstreet I found nothing.
