Type of a scam Identity Theft

I have been transcribing voicemails online for this company for several years. The other day I received an email from them saying they needed me to upload my government ID (either passport or driver’s license) in order to be able to continue typing for the company. They were specific that it be a color copy of the ID. I found this very strange that after all this time they need this information. Not just the driver’s license number but a color copy uploaded to the site. I did message the company to ask why they needed this new information and have not heard back yet. Any information you can obtain for me would be appreciated. I only make a few dollars a week when I transcribe so not sure it’s worth compromising my identity. Thank you for you assistance.
